BALJENAC ISLAND : CROATIA’S FINGERPRINT ISLAND IN THE ADRIATIC SEA
Baljenac island is located in the Adriatic sea, just off the coast of Croatia on the Sibenik archipelago. It is a small island. The island is also known as Maze island.
The oval- shaped island is spread about half a square mile and entirely covered with many dry stone walls. From the above it looks like a huge human fingerprint. Baljenac is basically an uninhabited place.
In the 19th century the stone walls were built by the local people, used for plants such as vineyard, olive trees, figs and other fruits. But why the stone walls were made ? The main reasons are given below –
1. For the purpose of agricultural activites.
2.To demarcated the agricultural plots.
3. To protected the vineyards and olive trees from high wind speed.
4. To prevented the land from soil erosion.
The 23 km. long highly concentrated stone walls are very unique in nature. Therefore, the Croatia Government has requested the UNESCO to include the island in it’s list of World Heritage Sites.
