🗺️ 1. What is a Map?
Earth is three-dimensional (3D) and has a geoid shape.
A map is a two-dimensional (2D), reduced representation of the whole or part of the Earth's surface.
Maps use scale, projection, symbols, colours and shades.
A map is a selective, symbolised and generalised representation of the Earth's surface.
A simple network of lines/polygons without scale is a sketch, not a map.
✏️ 2. Essentials of Map Making
There are 5 major essentials:
1. Scale — determines the amount and detail of information shown.
2. Map Projection — transforms the Earth's curved surface onto a plane.
3. Map Generalisation — selects and simplifies information according to purpose and scale.
4. Map Design — selection of symbols, colours, lettering, lines, shades and legend.
5. Map Construction & Production — drawing and reproduction of maps, now greatly aided by computers.
🏺 3. History of Map Making
The oldest known map mentioned in the chapter was found in Mesopotamia on a clay tablet, dating to about 2500 B.C.
Greek and Arab geographers contributed significantly to modern cartography.
Important contributions included measurement of Earth's circumference and the use of geographical coordinates.
Aerial photography greatly stimulated map-making during the 19th and 20th centuries.
In India, early developments are associated with the Vedic period and scholars such as Aryabhatta, Varahamihira and Bhaskara.
Todarmal developed land surveying for revenue collection.
Survey of India was established in 1767 and later produced maps of the country.

A. Large-scale maps
Show small areas in greater detail.
Cadastral Maps — property/field boundaries and ownership.
Topographical Maps — relief, drainage, forests, settlements, transport and other details.
B. Small-scale maps
Show large areas with greater generalisation.

Physical Maps
Show natural features.
Relief Maps → mountains, valleys, plains, plateaus, drainage.
Geological Maps → rocks and geological structures.
Climatic Maps → temperature, rainfall, humidity, winds, etc.
Soil Maps → distribution and properties of soils.
Cultural Maps
Show human-made features.
Political Maps → administrative divisions.
Population Maps → distribution, density, growth, age, sex and social composition.
Economic Maps → crops, minerals, industries, markets and trade.
Transportation Maps → roads, railways, railway stations and airports.
📐 6. Uses of Maps
Maps help geographers, planners and resource scientists measure:
Distance
Straight lines → scale/dividers.
Irregular routes such as rivers and coastlines → thread or rotameter.
Direction
North is the base/zero direction.
North, South, East and West = Cardinal Points.
Intermediate directions occur between them.
Area
Can be estimated using a square/graph-paper method.
A polar planimeter can also be used for area measurement.
