Alaknanda basin
The River Alaknanda rises at the confluence and fed of Satopath and Bhagirathi Kharak glacier in Uttarakhand and meet the Sarasvati River tributary at Mana, India, 21 km from Tibet.
Three km below Mana the Alaknanda flows past the Hindu pilgrimage centre of Badrinath.
It further meets River Bhagirathi at Deoprayag and continues as River Ganga.
It lies in Garhwal Region of Uttarakhand and is 195 Km long. The basin area is about 10,882 sq km.
Several rivers in the Garhwal region merge with the Alaknanda at places called prayag or 'holy confluence of rivers'. Various tributaries joining River Alaknanda are:
Dhauliganga river at Vishnuprayag,
Nandakini River at Nandaprayag,
Pindar River at Karnaprayag,
Mandakini River at Rudraprayag, and finally it meets
Bhagirathi River at Devprayag.
The Alaknanda river is among the best for river rafting in the world due to its high rafting grade.
The Alaknanda system drains parts of Chamoli, Tehri, and Pauri districts.
There are many opertaional dam and HE projects in the Alaknanda basin namely Tapovan, Tharali, Vishnuprayag, Srinagar etc.
In addition to these more have been planned and are under constrcution like Kaliganga, Singoli Bhatwari etc.
There are around 23 Hydel projects in the basin including Alaknanda (Badrinath), Nandprayag Langasu, Lata Tapovan, Devsari Dam, Vishnugad Pipalkoti etc.
