Latitude and Longitude
Welcome to geographia97.blogspot.com page.Welcome to geographia97.blogspot.com. We are here to provide you the study material in geography of all class and all boards. Student always tried to get more marks if they practice regularly. To ease the studying process, online books, pdf, solution and study materials are provided at geographia. The materials that we are providing is completely prepared by expert teachers. This will be in both English and Bengali language. Here it is……..
Latitude and Longitude
We all see the Map and Globe. If You see the Map and Globe,You can find some lines that are running from east to west direction and some lines are running from North to South.where these two lines are intersected, that point is known as Grid.
For an example, The position of the City of kolkata is indicated by 22°33'36"N and 88°25'12"E.This means that Kolkata is located at anguler distance of 22°33'36" north of equator. And 88°25'12"East of Greenwich.and the position of Kolkata is intersected of 22°33'36"N latitude and 88°25'12"E longitude.
What are these lines?
These are latitudes and longitudes.
● The latitude has the symbol of phi, and it shows the angular distance between the straight line in the certain point and the equatorial plane.
●The line runs from west to east direction these are known as Latitude.
●The line runs from North- South known as Longitude.
●As we know equator divides our earth into two equal halves.
●Northern part of equator is known as Northern hemisphere.
●Southern part of equator is known as Southern hemisphere.
● Line of Latitude Starts from 0° at Equator end 90° at both Poles.
●There are total 180° latitudes.
●Therefore The higher value of latitudes are closer to the poles and lower values are near to equator.
What is the distance between two latitude?
● The line of latitude are known as Parallels.as earlier mentioned that there are total 180° latitudes.
● The distance between two latitudes are 110 kilometer s or 69 miles.
● Major latitudes :-
- Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere measuring around 23½° N
- Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere measuring around 23½° S.
- Arctic Circle which is at 66½° North of the equator.
- Antarctic Circle which is at 66½° South of the equator.
Briefly describe the Major Latitudes.
Equator:-
1.Earth is divided into two parts by equator.
2.it measures at 0°
3.Equator is 40,075km(24901 miles)Long.
4. Equator crosses 79% (approximately) water and 21%of land (approximately).
Tropic of Cancer
1. Tropic of Cancer marks at 23.5 °N.
2. It lies in Northern hemisphere.
3.Sunray falls vertically over it on 21st June which is known as Summer solstice.
1. Tropic of Cancer marks at 23.5 °S.
2. It lies in Southern hemisphere.
3.Sunray falls vertically over it on 22nd December which is known as winter solstice.
Horse Latitude
Generally Horse Latitudes are found in both hemisphere at 30°
Longitude:-
●The longitude has the symbol of lambda.
●It is another angular coordinate defining the position of a point on a surface of earth. The longitude is defined as an angle pointing west or east from the Greenwich Meridian.
●The longitude can be measured maximum as 180° east from the Prime Meridian and 180° west from the Prime Meridian.
●The distance between two meridians are as same as two latitudes has that is 69miles or 110 km.
● It is noted that west from the prime meridian is counted as negatively and east is positively.
International date line.:-
●The International Date Line (IDL) is an imaginary line on Earth's surface defining the boundary between one day and the next.
