  Richthofen’s answer to the question : What is geography ? As soon to be acclaimed as the pioneer statement on the scope and method of modern geography – one that, in the words of Hartshorne “set the direction of geographic thought for the future.” According to Richthofen, it was the distinctive purpose of geography to focus attention on the diverse phenomena that occur in interrelation on the face of the earth.
