SAFE CITIES INDEX 2021
The Economist Intelligence Unit has published its 2021 Safe Cities Index, ranking 60 major global cities with 76 indicators based on digital, health, infrastructure, environmental and personal security.
The Index was first released in 2015.
Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark, is the world’s safest city from among 60 global cities, in Safe Cities Index 2021, released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).
Copenhagen scored 82.4 points out of 100, to top the fourth edition of the EIU’s biennial index, which measures the level of urban safety.
Yangon is at the bottom of the index, as least safe city, with a score of 39.5.
New Delhi is placed at 48th position with a score of 56.1, while Mumbai is at 50th place with a score of 54.4.
The cities are scored on a scale of 0 to 100. The safety score range is rated in the following manner:
0-25 – Low Safety
25.1-50 – Medium Safety
50.1-75 – High Safety
75.1-100 – Very High Safety

1. Copenhagen - 82.4
Copenhagen has been named the world’s safest city in a new wide-reaching study from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). Copenhagen scored 82.4 out of 100.
2. Toronto - 82.2
Toronto, the capital of the province of Ontario secured the second position with a score of 82.2.
3. Singapore - 80.7
The city slipped from its second-ranking to third with 80.7 to be one of the safest place amid the pandemic.
4. Sydney - 80.1
Sydney, the capital of New South Wales and one of Australia's largest cities is in the world’s top 10 safest cities list with 80.1 points out of 100.
5. Tokyo - 80.0
The top scorer for the year 2019, Tokyo climbed down to the fifth position with 80.0 marks in the safest city 2021 list.
6. Amsterdam - 79.3
Netherlands’ capital Amsterdam is in the world’s top 10 safest cities list with 79.3 points out of 100.
7. Wellington - 79.0
In the top 10 safest cities in the world list, New Zealand's capital Wellington take the seventh spot with a score of 79.
8. Hong Kong - 78.6
With 78.6 points, Hong Kong is the eighth safest city in the world.
9. Melbourne - 78.6
Melbourne is the coastal capital of the southeastern Australian state of Victoria. Melbourne took the ninth spot with 78.6 points in the 2021 safest city list.
10. Stockholm - 78.0
Stockholm, the capital of Sweden made be in the top 10 list of safest cities in the world by scoring 78 points
With a score of 56.1 and 54.4, respectively, New Delhi and Mumbai ranked among the first 50 on the global Safe Cities Index 2021,
Mumbai is safer than New Delhi, on the ‘personal security’ front, New Delhi ranked 41st (52.8) while Mumbai ranked 50th (48.2). Copenhagen was the list topper.
In the ‘digital security’ category, New Delhi ranked 48th (47.5) while Mumbai ranked 53rd (45.4). The top position was bagged by Sydney.
Mumbai (44th) lagged New Delhi (40th) in ‘health security’ with the top position in this category going to Tokyo.
New Delhi ranked 44th in ‘infrastructure security’ while Mumbai ranked 48th. The top position was bagged by Hong Kong.
However, on the ‘environmental security’ front, New Delhi (49th) lagged Mumbai (46th). The category topper was Wellington.
