DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MESSA AND BUTTE
DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN MESSA AND BUTTE
The
difference between a butte and a mesa is in their heights and size of the flat
tops. A butte and a mesa are both geological landscape formations. Due to the
forces of erosion, a mesa eventually gets reduced to a butte.
MESSA |
BUTTE |
A mesa
is a medium size flat-topped hill or mountain. |
a
butte is a small flat-topped or pointed hill or mountain. |
a mesa
is a much larger, slightly less elevated feature. |
a
butte is taller than it is wide |
Once a
plain land, continuous erosion of surrounding areas makes it an elevated
landmass and the top layer resists denudation of underlying rocks, thus
giving it its characteristic shape. |
Continued
denudation by wind and water gradually reduces the Mesa into small flat hills
called Buttes. |
