KEYWORDS: GEOGRAPHY ICSE CLASS 9, CHAPTER 1, EARTH AS A PLANET

Answer these questions briefly:

1.How does the distance between the earth and the sun favorable to the earth?

ans:- The distance between earth and Sun is useful because in this zone the water remains in liquid form which supports life. The distance between sun and moon is 150millions kms. This zone is called goldilocks zone

2.What are the three unique features of the earth?

ans:- Three unique features of earth are:

A.It is located at an optimum distance from the Sun. Hence, it is neither too cold nor too hot.

B.The earth is a watery planet with 70% of the earth's surface covered by water.

C.It has an atmosphere which receives heat from the sun by solar radiation and loses heat by earth's radiation.

3.Mention three features of the earth that make it suitable for life?

ans:- The features of the earth that make it suitable for life:-

A.Distance of the Earth from the Sun.

B.Importance of light on the Earth.

C.Importance of Earth's Atmosphere.

D.Importance of Ozone Layer.

Favourable Climatic Condition.

Water.

Force of attraction (Earth's gravitational pull)

4.Mention the importance of the lithosphere?

ans:-The lithosphere is very important because it is a large reservoir of resources, which are so useful to man. The majority of the material objects which man requires are supplied by lithosphere.

1 The lithosphere is very important because it is a large reservoir of resources, which are so useful to man. The majority of the material objects which man requires are supplied by lithosphere.

2 The lithosphere is also the major source of fuels such as coal, petroleum and a natural gas. Without these fuels human life, as we know it today, would have been impossible.

3 The lithosphere in combination with the hydrosphere and the atmosphere plays a vital role in the growth of plants and animals. Itprovides nutrients to the plants. The plants are the source of food for man and all other animals.

5.What is antipodal balance?

ans:- The distribution between Land and Ocean is called Antipodal Balance.

6.What did Pythagoras postulate about the shape of the earth?

ans:- the shape of the earth is not flat it is spherical in shape

7.What is the actual shape of the earth?- _---Spheriods/Geoids

8.Which factor is responsible for the shape?

Ans:- the factor responsible for this shape is centrifugal force.the Equatorial circumference of the earth is 40,075 km

9.What is the equatorial circumference of the earth?

Ans:-40,075 km

10.Explain the views of Eratosthenes regarding the measurement of the circumference of the earth?

Ans:-Eratosthenes then measured the angle of a shadow cast by a stick at noon on the summer solstice in Alexandria, and found it made an angle of about 7.2 degrees, or about 1/50 of a complete circle. He realized that if he knew the distance from Alexandria to Syene, he could easily calculate the circumference of Earth.

11.What is lunar month? Ans:-a month measured between successive new moons

12.What are the characteristics of the topography of the moon?

Ans:- Irregular and characterized by high peaks,Mountains and craters.

13.What is hydrosphere?

ans:-all the waters on the earth's surface, such as lakes and seas, and sometimes including water over the earth's surface, such as clouds.is called hydrosphere.

14.State five evidences to prove the spherical shape of the earth.

A.Watch a ship sail off to sea

B.Watch a lunar eclipse

C.Sunrise and sunset

D.Bedford Level of Experiment

E.Pole star

15.Why only one side of the moon is is visible from the earth?

Ans:-Only one side of the Moon is visible from Earth because the Moon rotates on its axis at the same rate that the Moon orbits the Earth – a situation known as synchronous rotation, or tidal locking. The Moon is directly illuminated by the Sun, and the cyclically varying viewing conditions cause the lunar phases.

16.What is Geoids? ans:-the actual shape of the eart
